The Penangite has enough ranking points to replace China’s Chen Long as the new world No. 1 when the rankings are released on Thursday. Chong Wei is now second with 88,953 points, just 3,241 points behind Chen Long’s 92,194.

He is guaranteed to earn at least 9,350 points as runner-up or a maximum of 11,000 points if he wins the title.

Chong Wei reigned as world No. 1 from 2006 to 2014 before dropping all the way to No. 182 after being suspended eight months for a doping violation.
